Being a BLACK BELT
Once you have learnt the fundamental techniques of the system, this is the time to really understand  them. You may think you have already done this, but in fact what you have done is become skilled in memorising techniques. Now you must study each technique as it applies to you personally. You must turn your skill into an art form. Until now, your effort has been concentrating on the mechanics of each technique, now you must perform them without conscious though. This will allow you to move beyond mere execution, our techniques can then become more graceful, powerful, yet seemingly effortless. If the opponent responds in an unexpected way, then you move up a gear and slip into an alternative technique. You feel their every movement and respond instictively and correctly.

Teaching others will increase your understanding, by explaining and correcting their errors and will give you insights which you can never gain as a student. You may recognise mistakes in students which you failed to pick up yourself, so through coaching others your own standard will improve. Such is the way of the BLACK BELT. So whereas before you thought of a BLACK BELT as the ultimate goal to aim for, now you will realise it is just the beginning. Be proud of where you are, now train in the art form.

Kick boxing - Thai Kik Jitsu

Specialises in competition fighting and advanced fitness training.

I have now trained with Si-Jo Ross for 6 years. I started martial arts at the age of 6 which has allowed me to sample quite a few styles.

I initially started with taekwondo in order to become more like the Karate kid but quickly found it an enjoyable and rewarding hobby with clear benefits of fitness and confidence. I gained a good grounding in this martial art and many of the drills and combinations that come so readily to me now were due to my young years in this art.

The styles I have studied include  Taekwondo (ITF), Thai boxing, Kickboxing, Karate and Kung Fu. There is a style out there suited to everyone and I have found that thai-kik-jitsu is the best fit for me.

Having trained for so many years I made the decision to pressure test the techniques in a controlled environment and  have now spent a number of years successfully competing on the BIKMA and GBMAA circuits with a good amateur record. My record has

resulted in invitations for three years running to the Southern Regions “Only The Strong” tournament.

Recent successes include a gold and silver medal in Britain’s semi-contact super league and a gold in the Men’s Middle Weight Southern Open.

In order to best compliment my sport kickboxing background I recently stayed in one of Thailand’s most prestigious Thai Boxing camps to further my knowledge in full contact fighting. During this time I gained

valuable tips and insights into tournament preparation and new training methods. The trip has taken my training to another level and has enabled me to safely increase the tempo for others in my training sessions.

My specialties lie in competition techniques and pad work drills.

I would definitely push fitness, work rate, technique and determination as the keys to success in the ring.

I’ve studied Thai Kick Jitsu Kickboxing with The Martial Arts School RW for around five years. I have also studied Shito Ryu Bubishi Karate in London for around two years. I originally started Martial Arts for a bit of fun but have since found countless other benefits that are applicable beyond fighting. Si Jo Ross is a very competent instructor and he is open to knowledge from any Martial Art.

I started kick boxing like most people as a good way to keep fit . I wanted something that was more challenging than lifting weights or rowing and it seemed a great way to release the day to day stresses.  Now several years later it has become a lifestyle for me with the largest proportion of my spare time spent teaching, training and developing my passion further.  It’s an old cliché but for me it is all about being able to unite your mind, body and soul together. By understanding how these influence and control each other you can take the simple techniques learned in class and use them to get the best out yourself in nearly any situation from competition fighting to interviewing for a new job.

I have been training with Ross for over 2 years now on a 1-2-1 basis and I am currently training for my Black belt.  The club has grown from strength to strength in the last few years, due to the delivery of the lessons and quality of the members.  I have enjoyed the last few years with Ross, made some good friends inside and outside the class.  The school offers a variety of Martial Arts so if you are not sure which martial art to follow I would suggest to turn up to a number of classes and see which one you like.

The club is a huge part of my life and I put as much commitment as possible into it because I believe in the values it is based on, such as training hard and working together to reach our individual and club goals.  I train more in Kung Fu and Chin Na because it is something that I may need to use in my job. In addition to this, I have an interest in weapons, forms and kick boxing because I believe that training in each of these disciplines will help my other styles to strengthen and become more effective.

I enjoy teaching other students because I take pride in what I do and every time I improve I can pass it on to them which in turn will help them to develop at a faster pace.
